To verify a Colombian dentist, search their name or ID number in RETHUS — the Registro Único Nacional del Talento Humano en Salud, the Ministry of Health’s official register of everyone legally authorised to practise a health profession in Colombia. The public search page is free, open to anyone, and available at the SISPRO citizen consultation portal. If a dentist appears with an active registration and no sanctions recorded, they are licensed to practise.
That is the short answer, and it takes about two minutes. The longer answer matters more if you are flying in for veneers or implants, because a valid RETHUS entry confirms someone is a dentist — it does not automatically confirm they are a registered specialist in the procedure you are booking. Two things make RETHUS genuinely useful to an international patient rather than just a bureaucratic formality.
First, it is a single national register. Colombia does not run a patchwork of state-by-state dental boards the way the United States does, so there is one place to look regardless of whether your dentist practises in Cali, Bogotá, Medellín, or Cartagena.
Second, it records disciplinary sanctions. The register carries information on sanctions reported by the ethics and disciplinary tribunals, and the public consultation space specifically lets citizens see which professionals in medicine, dentistry, and nursing have been sanctioned by those tribunals. How to Verify a Dentist in Colombia Using RETHUS: Step by Step

- Complete the image verification and submit. The portal uses a simple confirmation step before returning results.
- Read the profession field carefully. A result will show the registered profession or occupation. Confirm it reads as a dental profession, and check whether any postgraduate specialty is listed alongside it.
A useful red flag. The Ministry of Health does not issue RETHUS certificates to individuals, precisely because the register is public and consultable online. If a clinic emails you an official-looking “RETHUS certificate” PDF as proof of credentials, treat it with caution — the ministry’s position is that you should verify directly in the register instead. Ask for the dentist’s full legal name and check it yourself.
The Specialty Gap Most Patients Miss
This is the part worth slowing down for, because it is where a technically accurate answer can still leave you with the wrong impression.
RETHUS registers a base profession first — for a dentist, that is odontólogo. Postgraduate specialties are handled separately: a dentist who completes a specialisation in oral rehabilitation, periodontics, endodontics, or oral surgery must report that qualification as an update to their existing RETHUS record, through their professional college or the relevant departmental health secretariat.
The practical consequence is straightforward. A dentist can be entirely legitimate, fully registered, and in good standing — while having no specialty recorded in RETHUS. That may mean they genuinely hold no postgraduate specialisation, or it may mean they hold one and simply have not filed the update.
Neither situation is misconduct. But if you are booking full-arch implants or a twenty-unit smile makeover, the difference between a general dentist and a registered oral rehabilitation specialist is worth knowing about before you fly.
What to do with this. Treat RETHUS as your licence check and ask the clinic directly for the specialty credential — the university, the year, and the degree title. A specialist who has done the training will answer that question in a sentence. Where RETHUS covers people, REPS covers providers: clinics, hospitals, independent practitioners operating as providers, and critically, the specific services each site is authorised to deliver. Any provider offering health services in Colombia must be registered in REPS with at least one physical site and at least one enabled service.

Postgraduate specialties are recorded as an update to an existing RETHUS entry, filed through the professional college or a departmental health secretariat. It is a separate administrative step from initial registration, and not every qualified specialist has completed it.

The two registries answer genuinely different questions. RETHUS tells you a person is licensed. REPS tells you a physical site is authorised to deliver a specific service. A licensed dentist working from a site without the relevant enabled service is a real, if uncommon, gap — and it is exactly the gap that matters when a procedure involves sedation.
